History

Mont Orgueil Castle was built 1204 after King John had lost Normandy to the French. It was built to defend against the threat of French invasion. Also known as Gorey Castle, this 13th century fortress looks over the beautiful fishing village of Gorey on the eastern side of the island. It is an important part of Jersey Heritage and has seen life as a prison, a spy station, a seat of government and is an icon for Jersey Pride and Independence.
